serious tax hikes and spending cuts that would potentially send the u.s. into another recession. we don't want to see that a. right now senate leaders are trying to assemble a last minute tax deal that they hope can pass both chambers of congress. and make it to the president's desk before monday's midnight deadline. chief congressional correspondent mike emmanuel has more on this. what are the latest on these talks to avoid a fiscal catastrophe? >> the key negotiators have been tight lipped, which may be a good sign talking to one another and not to reporters. senate majority leader harry reid and mitch mcconnell asked president obama and other congressional leaders to give them time to work on a compromise deal, recognizing time is running out. again today, the president emphasized the need for action. >> and congress can prehave not it from happening if they act now. leaders in congress are working on a way to prevent this tax hike on the middle class and i believe we may be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time. >> we are told conversations are taking place. m
the next couple of display out and will the president's tactics work? joining us is jamie weinstein. what do you think of that? >> i don't know if his threats are going to work very much because even his proposal has to have the acquiescence of all senators. the fact of the matter is senators know whether they do something or not the next day after the fiscal cliff there is going to be a bill in congress to lower tax rates after all the tax rates expire below $250,000. maybe at this point it looks like the big win that the republicans might get, if you want to call it that, is extending that slightly upwards to $400,000 or $500,000. this is bare bones deal. we're not solving our fiscal approximate and not discussing it. this is going to be fought another day, perhaps in a month with the debt ceiling. >> gregg: "wall street journal" probably had in an op-ed today the best line of the week. we'll put it up on the screen. the fiscal cliff melodrama is bad cabling reality show, real housewives of new jersey without the seven siartd without though not without the plastic surgery. they are phon
to work. take a listen. >> it allows us not just to work within our own pg and e staff, but with first responders and have them on site working shoulder to shoulder. >> first responders on stand-by not just in california, but also in states of nevada are where they're expected to declare a state of emergency, possibly sunday. so much rain is going to fall in the next 12 hours or so, that they've handed out sandbags in places like reno, for example, where they expect to see heavy rains. also the river in nevada, that expected to flood by at least four foot in part. the national weather center also putting out a fresh flood warning for the napa river. they're saying the areas of saint helena and napa city itself could see the level of water rise above the 16-foot safety mark, not entire leisure just where exactly it could burst its banks. but emergency crews on stand-by for that. of course, continued travel disruption. san francisco airport delays of up to 30 to 90 minutes. but after that heavy rain hits overnight and heavy winds as well, those delays could go on for a lot longer. major
